Control can be done on on/off or on smooth regulation basis, using PWM (Pulse width modulation). They are also useful in case of multi-system integrations.
As the name suggests, these modules are working with transistor outputs in Open Collector scheme. Transistor, with active outputs, shorts output circuit to GND. Brightness, or motors RPM regulations is done by changing the width of pulses in PWM signal. Besides from outputs, a few versions of MOC family has also potential-free inputs.
